In 1907, ALAN PAINE's predecessor, Paines of Godalming, was founded in Surrey, England, a county with a long history in the wool industry. After World War II, in the 1950s, the company expanded into the US with funding from the British government. The company also undertakes OEM production of sweaters for a long-established, historic brand favored by successive US presidents. Around that time, the brand name was changed to the current ALAN PAINE, and the historic brand continues to provide high-quality knitwear today.
